I believe Jerry was the youngest mayor ever to be elected to office at the time. I think someone younger was elected somewhere more recently.

Close, but not quite.

Fun fact: Dennis Kucinich, was elected mayor just down the road in Cleveland, Ohio at just 31 years old, At that time Kucinich was the youngest mayor of a “major” U.S. city. Because of his youth, he famously earned the nickname "the boy mayor of Cleveland" However, there were even a few teenage mayors of non major cities in the late 70s.
