I rode almost 100 miles on my bike last week, including an amazing 32 miles through pine trees and farmland in southern New Jersey on Sunday. Then Monday morning, I was horizontal. I got my ass kicked by a (likely: toddler-borne) virus all week… I am now full of liquids — hot tea and soup. I might be in the same clothes I’ve slept in (for multiple nights). And I’m not quite sure what day it is. So, it’s been a week. But, hey, at least my neighborhood is ready for Halloween!.
Here are 5 things I’ve been looking at and loving:
So, this week I’ve mostly been dozing on the couch under layers of blankets. And in my waking hours, I’ve been binging Nobody Wants This and I’m trying to get into The Paper, but really…it’s not The Office, plus I want better for newspapers and community journalism. I just want every town to have The Midcoast Villager.
I adore Samin, so I’m happy that more episodes of Home Cooking dropped. If you want to buy me a good Christmas gift, I love their sweatshirt (size S, pls)!
Big congrats to GW student Jordan Tovin, this year’s College Photographer of the Year. Jordan is one of those guys you want to root for. Incredibly nice. Super hard working. A total sponge. And takes feedback because he wants to always be and do better. One of the only students in DC who reached out about attending our #tacosyfotos lunches and subsequently reached out to almost everyone there about assisting them or meeting them one-on-one for coffee to ask questions about approaches on stories, critiques of his work, and bounce ideas off of.
“I’ve been swimming in a whirlpool of huge misadventure, and it’s been a cesspit, really, my life. There’s no other way of describing it.” Don McCullin has spent seven decades documenting conflict and tragedy, and now, at age 90, he reflects on some of his greatest photos, as well as pain, pride, and regret.
Pretty wild reading about this meteorologist who flew into the eye of Melissa1. The US Air Force video on that page is… insane.

Same feeling about The Paper. If you didn't catch it when it came out, check out Alaska Daily...based on Pro Publica reporting. Pretty good depiction of the operation of a community newspaper.
Those CPOY photos are fantastic!
