Here are 5 things I was looking at and loving this week:
Did you know that oranges1 originated in China and spread across the world along with the spread of Islam? Tangerines are from Tangier, Morocco, and Valencia oranges are from Valencia, Spain, though they were much more successful in California, so much so that almost none are grown in Spain currently… I recently read Oranges by John McPhee, which has given me loads of fun citrus facts and a comprehensive look at Florida through the eyes of the orange groves. It started as a New Yorker piece in the early 1960s and he encountered so many amazing tidbits and interesting characters along the way it turned into a wonderful short novel. And unplanned, but piggybacking on Oranges perfectly was my reading of Anne Hull’s Through the Groves. Anne was a rockstar reporter2 at the St. Petersburg Times when I was an intern and I’ve been a big fan for years. Her book about growing up on the Ridge in Florida took me back. As a native Floridian, I think it’s an amazing story of place, though I enjoyed the coming-of-age aspect, too.
One of the coolest things I’ve seen this week: Scanning Kyoto.
I’m excited to check out this documentary on one of my favorite photographers (of family and celebrity) turned guerrilla-style street artists: Who Is Michael Jang?

She was a Pulitzer Finalist for Una Vida Mejor, a story about crab pickers from Mexico coming to the US in search of a better life. It was the first story I read in the St. Pete Times and it hit my doorstep the Sunday before I started my internship there. She went onto become a five-time Pulitzer Prize finalist who won the award in 2008 for coverage of the poor care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, is leaving The Washington Post. I finally had the honor of working with Anne when we were paired up covering the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando for the Washington Post.
Thanks for the sharing Scanning Kyoto!
