Happy Pi Day. And Happy Friday! We made it through another week, y’all.
Here are 5 things I was looking at (and loving?!) this week:
I remember watching in horror as editors from the Tampa Bay Times tossed negatives into the trash — gone was the visual history from the paper’s 125-year history. Gone was the best record of that city. Gone was documentation of people and a place. All gone… because they didn’t have the time, money, or manpower to digitize them. It’s a damn shame. To this point, Kira Pollack wrote about how photos are disappearing, “one archive at a time.” She says, “We risk losing not just the images but also our ability to bear witness to history itself.” And this all gets worse, especially when it’s done out of spite: War heroes and military firsts are among 26,000 images flagged for removal in Pentagon’s DEI purge.
#Fitting: The Trump White House has hired Patrick Witty, the Pulitzer-winning photo editor who left National Geographic in 2017 after allegations of misconduct.
I’m in awe. So much zine inspiration lately. Start here. And graduate to this.
Yes, I have a toddler, but… the Sesame Street Tiny Desk concert is great and will make you smile.
Lastly, I’ll leave you with a Pixies cover you didn’t know you needed, until now.
How have I never seen that Sesame Street Tiny Desk Concert! Delightful!
Now that's what I call a varied selection, thanks Melissa! 😊The destruction of those archives is pretty unbelievable though...I would have thought a military museum might want to take on the files rather than lose important historical records.
