Here are 5 things I was looking at, loving, and/or was moved by this week:
[trigger warning: graphic images of gun violence are shown here. please protect yourself. if looking at this will cause you any sort of anguish or trauma, click on this link instead.] THIS is exactly what journalism should do. American Icon: Terror on Repeat is such a powerful gut punch because as the Washington Post says “…the AR-15’s destructive force is rarely seen in public.” Also, read Executive Editor Sally Buzbee’s note on why they published such “disturbing content.”
This first-person piece about a family and tribe ravaged by opioids also moved me. Haunting words, touching images. There’s such power in the personal. And that reminds me, if you need an incredible book to read, I can’t stop thinking about “Demon Copperhead,” in which opioids is a central character.
DAMN Speaking of books... A new Jesmyn Ward… A new Lauren Groff… A new Colson Whitehead… I need more hours in the day to get through this incredible list of the 100 must-read books of 2023.
I love how artists’ minds work. So, I’m obsessed with Walead Beshty, whose work FedEx Glass Works series is making the rounds. “They’re basically a unit of space that’s owned by a corporation, within which to ship objects….” And it’s genius.
Stoked for Andre 3k’s new album and its message: “Explore, man, explore.” It dropped this morning and I’m listening to and loving it. [Apple Music, Spotify]
