My interests are diverse. Always looking for inspiration, I read a lot about art and artists. Looking for an escape, I read a lot of fiction in search of a great story to transport me. And looking to educate myself, I’ll read nonfiction or news stories about things I’m working on or topics of national or international interest. And then an insane war broke out, which I was watching unfold in real-time as tweets about Russians invading Ukraine, air raid sirens sounding, and people fleeing took over my timeline late Wednesday night. As a photojournalist, part of me feels guilty for not being there, but mostly I just feel incredibly grateful for smart, brave, thoughtful colleagues who are there, so all the world can see and feel...
There are some incredibly talented photojournalists on the ground in Ukraine right now that you should be following on Instagram, like: Brendan Hoffman, Justyna Mielnikiewicz, Oksana Parafeniuk, Emile Ducke, Evgeniy Maloletka, Lynsey Addario, Marcus Yam, Pete Kiehart, Emilio Morenatti, Alan Chin, Erin Trieb, Justin Yau, Michael Robinson Chavez, Salwan Georges, Aris Messinis, Wolfgang Schwan, Ron Haviv, Vadim Ghirda, Alex Lourie, Carlos Barria & more. I also created a Twitter list, so you can keep tabs there, too.
The Baltimore Museum of Art’s security guards are curating an exhibit. It’s awesome that the people who probably spend more time with the art than anyone else now get to share what speaks to them. “Guarding the Art” opens March 27. I’d love to see more museums do this - open up the gatekeeping - and make art more accessible and relatable to folks.
“I know what keeps me going: it’s work. That’s what keeps most people going, isn’t it?” — artist David Hockney talks about what still excites him at age 84
AMEN. Just because someone enjoys what they do doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be compensated for it.
