I won’t bore you with all of the bad TV I’m binging over here (on a related note: note if you have any recommendations I’m all ears and eyes, drop me a comment!). And here are 5 things I was looking at and loving this week:
Rick Steves graduated high school in June 1973. The very next day he got on a plane to backpack through Europe with a friend. He spent 10 weeks there on $3 a day. (I bought Lonely Planet’s Europe on a Shoestring after my college graduation, and did it for about $30 a day — inflation — 25 years after him.) His detailed journals and postcards home are terrific glimpses into his future. Some of his postcards are so jampacked with tiny handwriting, but he’s typed them out on his blog. Here’s Greece. Here’s Austria. Here’s Rome. And, ICYMI, here’s my all-time favorite interview with him by Sam Anderson a few years back in the NYTMag.
Bloops, Julias, and Upsweeps… this Pamela Coloff tweet about a list of unexplained sounds sucked me in.
Everyone Likes Reading. Why Are We So Afraid of It?
Anytime @johnedwinmason sends me a DM that says "this might interest you" he's always right. He wrote a terrific blog post on Henry Martin, the Clan Barbecue, and the Power of Photography.
Skate Like a Girl’s Transenders is an inspiring short film exploring how the power of community allows you to be your true self, overcome failure, and transcend fear. (Of a pretty badass note: It was also directed, filmed, edited with final color and score by all-female and/or queer creative leaders.)
Night Sky on Prime with the amazing Sissy Spacek.
