Here are just a few gift ideas for the photographer in your life (or to simply treat yourself to) this holiday season — that are not camera lens coffee mugs.
Perhaps a photobook. There have been some great ones this year from the likes of Sol Neelman, Ben Brody, and Gabriella Angotti-Jones. There’s also the gift that keeps on giving — a subscription to Charcoal Book Club.
Or a book about the photo life: I loved “Photographs Not Taken,” “It’s What I Do” by Lynsey Addario is great. So is Jim Lo Scalzo’s “Evidence of My Exisitence.”
I love traveling with this little Fuji Instax printer. It prints your smartphone photos on Fuji film via Bluetooth and it’s a nice way to leave something behind.
A pack of Field Notes notebooks. There are some fun ones to keep track of all those great ideas, to journal in, keep notes on projects or jot down caption info.
Get a gorgeous print for your wall in the Diversify Photo Holiday Print Sale.
Any bag that Think Tank Photo makes. Seriously. You can’t go wrong with a low-profile Retrospective shoulder bag, Shape Shifter backpack, or a battery holder.
A membership to the National Press Photographers Association for community.
Donate to people doing good work, like the International Women’s Media Foundation, Women Photograph, NYC Salt, or the Bronx Documentary Center.
A membership to a local museum, gallery, or art center, for inspiration.
Continuing education is great, too. Last year, I was gifted a 4x5 class at a local photo center and a book-making class at an art center. Both were terrific gifts.
A massage, a trip to the chiropractor, or the Headspace App. No really. Take care of the photographers in your life (or yourself).
Happy Holidays, y’all.
