Here are a few things that fascinated me this week:
I love weird art. I am also fascinated by fun little details like the one (above) in Joseph Decker’s “Ripening Pears” painting at the National Gallery of Art. I went to the NGA this past weekend to check out the final day of the American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams exhibit (which bored me) and was much more taken by the Called to Create: Black Artists of the American South exhibit. Afterward I wandered around a bit, following my curiosity and honing in on pieces I’d never seen before and visiting old favorites like “Mound of Butter.”
Featureshoot: “These eleven newsletters remind us of the days before “likes” and algorithms–when we took our time looking at pictures, reading stories, and learning something new.”
Photographers, if you're not following @BillShapiro on Instagram, you should. Every Friday he does a "Meet This Photographer" post and it's turned me onto so many amazingly talented photographers making amazing work that I hadn't previously known about. 10/10 recommend.
This 1967 IBM ad directed by Jim Henson is well worth 5 minutes of your time.
I’ve been thinking a lot about Third Places and the need for more of them. the former Steak-umm Twitter guy does a great job of summing up why and has some other videos on TikTok, where he’s opining on walkable communities and missing middle housing.
BONUS: Shameless self-promotion: Wanna see what I’ve been up to lately? My other newsletter recently dropped.
