I love it when friends publish photo books — and when they’re awesome. Theo Stroomer’s Beloved Donuts is genius. I was living in LA when Theo first came through town, and I swear, I remember him bringing me a blue Cookie Monster donut, just like the one he photographed for the book. And I remember thinking, what a great idea… I wish I had thought of it. A few years later, a documentary came out, and I learned so much about the Cambodian immigrants in LA, donut culture, and the downfall of one man — The Donut King. In a recent newsletter, Theo alluded to being in the background of a doc about donuts, so now I have to rewatch it to see if I can spot him. Anyways, support good people doing great work, y’all. And go back and peep his Tumbleweeds project when you can.
I really enjoyed reading the backstories and getting a glimpse of the crazy days of some of the best sports photographers out there. Mad respect, y’all: A Chaotic Day In The Life Of The Photographers At The Tour de France (Thx Petey Pete!).
I had the honor of listening to former SNL and 30 Rock producer Lindsay Shookus speak recently (well, I was there to photograph her, but a perk of the job is being in the room with and learning from inspiring people). She talked about the Lessons Learned Late Night and applied them to business. At the end, she shared her guide for asking better questions. Anything is better than “How are you?”
