I took last week off… from the Substack because… birthday week. Which wasn’t really, because I had some busy days at work. Getting old is something, y’all. But it sure is fun to dream of a time when all my friends were invited over to my house to play and eat cake and ice cream. Why can’t we have that in our 40s, too? It’s kinda like how I need naptime even more now than I did when I was in kindergarten. I did get to go out one day and make some pretty pictures of DC, so there’s one little bright spot that I wanted to share with you.
Here are 5 things I was looking at and loving this week:
Speaking of aging: I love these reflections on the joys of aging and feel like I’m already an honorary member of the “old ladies who don’t give a flying fig” club.
I was mesmerized by this 4-minute timelapse of jeans made in under 4 hours (!).
The World Press Photo of the Year was recently announced. And yes, like you, I’ve seen the memes about World Press Photo capitalizing on the suffering of others, but I do think it’s different when the image is not made by a journalist parachuting in… instead taken by someone living there, covering one of the worst atrocities in the world, and trying to put a human face on all this suffering.
Big fan of Caroline Yang’s work, so I loved this interview on the art of letting go.
This photo by Brian Plonka is epic.
Try 70!
I just loved the "old ladies who don't give a flying fig club" - brilliant! And belated birthday wishes!
