I’m on assignment this week in Mississippi. It was my first flight in 25 months (I checked — my last flight was to my very last NPPA board meeting in February 2020!). So, I’ve been doing a lot of driving, hanging out in small towns (from Lorman to Cleveland to Tupelo), and eating some great Southern food… and also working. What I haven’t been doing is spending a lot of time online.
I’ve been listenings to some great podcasts, an audiobook, and playlists like the companion soundtrack to the Dolly Parton’s America podcast in the car. And at night I read a lot in my hotel room because I’m having a hard time putting Amor Towles’ The Lincoln Highway down (if you haven’t read his book A Gentleman in Moscow yet — what are you waiting for?!).
And while the world is a mess and everything is terrible, I did jump online to check on the news about Ketanji Brown Jackson's Supreme Court confirmation hearing, which was just long enough to have Senator Cory Booker bring me to tears. Damn. So powerful.
But, these are a few things I’ve read and seen this week that I wanted to share.
I really want to see C’mon Cmon even more so after reading Liz Kuball’s post.
One of the coolest things I’ve seen lately: For his “Ornithographies,” Xavi Bou shoots 30-60 frames per second, combining more than 600 shots woven together into the final, mesmerizing images of birds in flight like you’ve never seen before.

Speaking of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the most historic image to come from the Supreme Court confirmation hearing (so far) was taken by NYTimes fellow Sarabeth Maney, who said of it: “I knew how much it revealed in her admiration for her mother as a Black woman." Here’s the story behind it.
This story… and their bravery… my god… “The Russians were hunting us down. They had a list of names, including ours, and they were closing in. We were the only international journalists left in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol…”
