Here are 5 things I was looking at and loving this week.
Reminded of how good she is, I went down a Cat Power rabbit hole this week. And I remembered that photographer William Eggleston has a cameo in the video of one of my favorite songs, the very Memphis-centric track called “Lived in Bars.” Don’t sleep on that Cat Power sings Dylan album, either.
I was thrilled to see Washington, DC get a little love on Somebody Feed Phil’s newest season. I’ve been here for 5 years and I’ll tell anyone who’ll listen that DC punches well above its weight when it comes to amazing food. Happy to see some of my favorite restaurants like Thip Khao, Anju, Yellow, and classics like Ben’s Chili Bowl get a shoutout (and was also reminded I need to try Maketto, Mozzeria, and Stachowski’s still.) Surprised no Ethiopian spots got a nod though.
I recently finished James McBride’s The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store and was starting to look for my next great read when I came across this Twitter thread.
This week Kathy Ryan announced her departure from the NYTimes Magazine after 39 (!) years, and I can’t remember a time when I’ve seen so many incredible tributes and messages of thanks from so many great photographers (like: Pam Chen, Christopher Anderson, Djeneba Aduayom, Ang Smithers). That speaks volumes about the quality of her character and her power to transform lives.
There are some truly great photos and projects in the World Press Photo contest’s regional winners (of course, I wanted to see more from the Gay Space Agency). The four global winners — the World Press Photo of the Year, the World Press Photo Story of the Year, the World Press Photo Long-Term Project Award, and the World Press Photo Open Format Award — will be announced on 18 April 2024
I second the love for Cat Power sings Dylan. It's so good.
