There was a lot to like this week — the sun was out, it’s starting to warm up here in Washington, D.C., and slow-work January is starting to thaw, too. I’ve been on a TV kick and enjoyed binging Fisk and Bad Sisters, and am captivated by the new season of True Detective (if you’re watching anything you’d recommend, drop it in the comments!) — but I especially enjoyed the Tracy Chapman/Luke Combs Grammy duet. Here are 5 other things I was looking at and loving this week:
I recently read Die With Zero, after hearing the author Bill Perkins on a podcast. It’s a book with the premise that there’s no sense in making money just to save it since you can’t take it with you when you die. The biggest thing I took away from it is that you need three basic resources for good life experiences: Time, Money, and Health. You have different levels of these at different points in your life, and it’s up to you to figure out the sweet spot for certain experiences. Another thing I really appreciated is what was said about “Memory Dividends.” If you’d like a Cliff Notes version this is a great post. And as the caveat says, don’t read it if you’re eking by (basic needs come first!).
I read The Humans of Daniel Arnold’s New York during a quick trip to NYC.
Looking forward to reading: A journalist goes undercover to reveal the absurdity of the art scene. “Art devotees spoke like they were trapped in dictionaries and being forced to chew their way out,” Bosker writes. When she told a curator that a performance art piece was “boring,” the curator disagreed: It wasn’t boring, it was “durational.”
Largest journalism prize in the US, and he didn’t even know he was a candidate until he won... I love knowing this went to such a thoughtful and empathetic photojournalist and kind human — Congrats Tamir Kalifa!
Did you know that there was an unofficial Women’s World Cup soccer tournament in Mexico City in 1971 — with 100,000 fans packing the stadium? I didn’t either! And neither did Brandi Chastain or Alex Morgan! FIFA has never acknowledged it. And has tried to pretend it didn’t happen. So, yeah… I’m definitely looking forward to the Copa 71 documentary.
That Chapman combs duo was amazing
Did you like Die With Zero? I've heard the author on a few podcasts and have been considering giving it a read.
