It’s these simple acts of beauty and joy amidst the chaos and devastation of war that are so incredibly moving. This is what resistance looks like. This is what defiance in the face of tyranny looks like. This is what resiliency looks like.
This photo of a Ukrainian volunteer fighter using his body to shield Lynsey Addario hit me hard, as did these Salwan Georges photos of people saying goodbye at the train station.
How Ukrainian Photographers are Covering the War
There has been some incredible art illustrating the current events: like this week’s New Yorker cover, this piece from Marysia Machulska, the work being submitted to Creatives for Ukraine, and the street art popping up everywhere.
A lot of people have been looking for ways to help. Here’s a great list put together by Ukrainians of ways to help, including writing to politicians and attending rallies and events around the world, as well as some local organizations on the ground who could use your help. This is a good list of reputable aid groups. People are booking Airbnb rentals in Ukraine — not to stay, but to donate directly to hosts. Lastly, I believe it’s important to know where your money is going, and it’s an incredible form of protest to spend accordingly.
