Here are 5 things I was looking at and loving this week:
Sadly, I don’t know much about Ernest Cole, but after reading this I want to dive into his work, his life, and the documentary film (released late 2024) about both.
“The overriding idea for making the photographs and choosing what to include was being true to that younger version of me—or someone who wasn't like me, but was discovering that they were gay or lesbian.” I discovered Nancy Andrews’ book FAMILY: A Portrait of Gay and Lesbian America, after coming out in college and it was eye-opening for me to see so many amazing gay people, especially when I was pretty sure I was the only one — so thanks for that, Nancy. Read the NGA’s Q&A with Nancy Andrews, as she reflects on the work 30 years later.
Because it’s miserably hot in DC and I’m not riding much this week, I have been binging Tour De France Unchained. And Season 2 just dropped and it’s so good.
Recomendo recently turned me onto Euronews’ No Comment video segments. These segments feature short clips of raw, unedited video footage capturing events worldwide without narration. The lack of commentary makes them more impactful. Recent videos: “El Salvador transfers 2,000 inmates to mega prison” and “Ecuadorian village women play their self-invented sport.” There’s more here.
If you need more of a mental palette cleanser: One Minute Park TV is just that.
